Kennebec County (set off from Lincoln County in 1789)


Organized

1803 as Freetown Plantation


Incorporated

1804 as the town of Fairfax; name changed in 1821 to Ligonia, and in 1824 to Albion


Previous Designations

Most of the town lay in the Plymouth Claim (Kennebec Purchase), but the northern portion was taken from the Nelson Tract


Boundary Changes

Part was set off to form China in 1818

A tract known as the "Territory North of Albion" was annexed in 1835

Part of Unity Plantation (now Unity Township) was annexed in 1853

Land was set off to Benton in 1863
