The lower part of town was anciently known as Piscataqua, the upper as Newichawannock

Boundary Changes

Isles of Shoals (incorporated in part as Appledore in 1661, named changed to Isles of Shoales in 1665) was annexed in 1696

Upper Kittery was set off to form Berwick in 1713

Part of Berwick was annexed in 1716

The North Parish of Kittery was set off to become Eliot in 1810

Washington Remick's estate was set off to Eliot in 1826, and set off again in 1829 after the first act was repealed
